I am new to taxidermy but have alot of interest in it. i am about to mount my first deer head. do i have to set the horns on before i put the hide on the mannikan. i do not want to cut the hide all the way down the back of the neck and have alot of sewing to do. is there a right way of doing this? thanks

If you are using a short y cut you will need to set your antlers after you get the cape put on the manikin. Have it cut and your holes drilled before your ready to mount. I like to use the cut all the way down so when the day comes to mount I already have the antlers mounted and filled with mache. Plus it is easy to taxi the skin. E-mail if you have any more ?
Good luck and have fun.
not that theres anything wrong with cutting the cape all the way
but
travis if you want a short y and want everything ready after you put the skin on
just put some alum. foil over the form
mis your mache or whatever you like
let it dry and the foil comes right off
so that way you can have the best of both worlds
ps
ive gone back and forth with the amount of cut on the back
i dont like it all the way cut
but i dont like it ultra short either
i guess its somewhere in between
i find the ear butts easier to form that way
but experiment both ways and find your own style
