Hello, I have a deer mounted (for myself) that has 2 or 3 small scars and 1 scar that is a little larger from fighting. I am just wondering, is there a standard color used to finish scars. They dried lighter than they were (I think). Also, if anyone has a picture for reference I would appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

When ever i mount a deer with scars i try to keep them as natural as possible. If you need to color them a natural scar color is usually a light grey color but like i said. It looks more natural left alone or i also use a light gloss on them. I like to think it helps bring out the real character in the deer. Just tring to help i hope did and maybe you'll get more opinions from other people everyones pretty good on advice on here have fun knowmatter what you chose to do.
For my competition mule deer I had a scar under the right eye. I think scars are natural so I did not cut it out. I made it look like a scab with the scab slightly broken open. I used oil paints, very little, flesh, burnt umber, and a little ivory black. I put a few drop's of dryed blood on the hair around the scab by mixing mod-poge and a little grill red air brush paint. John Mathews thought it looked very natural and encuraged leaving natural scars in competition pieces. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I like the scars too. Most people dont want the scars to show, but as this mount was for me...I kept the deer like it was when it was alive. Thanks a lot!
