I guess sawdust would work but why not use epoxy and sculpt in the effect you want then paint it? I have always taken reference photos of rubbing debris as soon as the deer comes into the shop and tried to duplicate it with paint. I don't soak my skull caps. I borax them then use a torch to burn away any tissue that is left before dremeling the skull. This leaves the wood and I then repaint it to the way it looked in the reference photos. You could also take a knife or coarse file and "rub" off wood shavings from a tree to add to the effect. If I have loose shavings on a rack, I bag them until doing my finish work then glue them back in place.
What ive done before is take them out to the woods and rubbed them
on various trees (Cherry,Pine,Walnut ect.)You can make them as dirty
as you want..
