Earliners

What is the most frequent size used for the average W/T? Most of the earliners come in only Med.Alert, Most of the deer I take in seem to have ears larger that the Med. liner yet smaller than the Large liner. I have yet to use Ear Magic but am going to try it in the future. I have been using the large liners and trimming them down and have very little to no drumming.

Uhhh, not sure about that

MOST deer I see work well with the medium earliners. I use more "small" than I do "large" and obviously, Mr. Eppley feels the same way. My ears are fitted to the liner, not the other way around. I use Epo-Grip Liquid Fast Set and I align the ears to fit the liners. I'd rather have the ear fit than chance drumming.

Gary, Fit ear to the liner

When you take the cartilage off of the ear, you will notice that on the inside of the ear are 4 lines of skin, I don't know what they are called, but on the back side of these 4 lines of skin, you can score them with a blade length wise, and open them up and gain 1/4 - 3/8 of an inch. This will help the ear fit the liner, and not the other way around as George said. No reason to trim the liner. Eppleys liners are the best.

measuring them

I have been measuring after they are tanned and the cartilage removed, Maybe I am betting a little strech from them but since using Buckeye Supreme, roughing up the liners and wiping down with acetone I havent had any drumming (yet). My biggest worry was the earbutt being oversized.

Gary, be careful with the acetone

There are MUCH safer solvents to clean the liners with. Acetone is probably one of the most hazardous and dangerous chemicals we have access to. It is extremely flammable (explosive) and it permeates the skin and damages your liver. It even permeates rubber gloves. The fumes actually burn your lungs if you don't use a respirator. Try the epoxy glue. You won't NEED to wash the liner.
