I just finished my first open mouth mount & I think I am pleased, first I would like to say that I purchased 3 different jaw sets the first 2 are a well known brand but they did not seem quite right to me along with different toungs then the third set that I bought I really liked a full jaw set with the lower jaw & toung moulded together made by lonestar taxidermy supply for about half the price.
Enough babling, now my ? I have only mounted about 12 deer most I did not rebuild the bumps with modge podge including this open mouth.I noticed perticurly on this deer more so than the others quite a bit of little hair clusters on the nose pad which I would think they would be burried if I modge podge. Is that one thing to determine weather or not to modge podge? & also some of my referance pictures the nose pad is as smooth as the finished mount *** well ok I think now I am done babling. thanks!

It doesn't really adhere to hair that well. Try putting droplets on the whiskers under the chin sometime. I think it was Bill Yox who said that he paints a THIN layer on the nose, then puts the bumps on, and after it dries, he paints the noses and then puts a final coat on over the paint. I THINK. Some of the best looking work I ever saw was done completely with brushes and oils by Ben Mears. The nose had a natural luster without being shiny and looked moist enough to be alive.
recently had an indepth article on how Mike Rohanna finished his deer using Mod Podge. I have finished 4 deer using his method. I really like it. You mod it first, then paint red or flesh, just in the center and wipe off. That way it stays just in the cracks. Then using a mixed charcoal grey paint the nose. Then paint just the outer area with black. Gloss to your preference. Looks really great. As far as the hairs... Don't really know what to tell you. Hope it helps!
I did my first few deer with a dan d noser and then got an education through this forum. I now use mod podge with good results. First put a thin layer on the pad, next look at the actual nodules and use the mod podge carefully build them up one at a time. It sounds time consuming but actually only takes a minute. Be careful not to get your build ups to close to each other on the first pass or they'll group together. Let dry and get the nodules you didn't get the first time. Craft stores sell small tips that can be used on 2oz. bottles so you'll be able to control the amount of MP you're using. Once dried I do my painting and seal. Bill Yox covered most of this in a back issue of Breakthrough.(Issue 59) I also put the MP on the whiskers of my deer. Some customers appreciate little things like that! Best Wishes. Jeff F.
You mod podge on the nodules, around the whiskers,so it doesn't interfere with them at all. Jeff F.
