I just completed a shoulder mount of a deer. Everything looks great but the mount has a strong musty odor to it. Is there any way to get rid of this smell? I believe it may have been caused from heat and humidity. Thanks

probably humidity. is it a strong tanning odor? i had some like that. i do them in my basement. this last one i did, it was so humid being 95 degrees out, i had to bring upstairs & put in room with air conditioner. i do like them to dry slow though. the smell i got was a strong smell of the tan. however it did disappear when dry. you did not mention if your cape was tanned or dp. if you have air conditioner, put in that room. or some people use a fan. good luck to ya.
Art, try spraying the deer with febreeze, this should work, but if it doesn't you'll have to go with one of the stronger odor killers.
I too have had the musty smell on a couple of deerheads. It is not the chemical smell it is from the skin mildewing underneath and deep in the ears.
I pulled one apart and that is what I found. More common in mounts that are not tanned. Having just cream applied.
I cannot smell so called tanning chemicals. So I am thinking the only other thing is tanning oils.
One thing I have noticed walking into other taxidermy shops is the stink of dead animals, mostly animal body fluids that have bacteria buildup on them. Not cleaning the floor, or counter tops. MUST GAMEHEADS!
