doing a drop camp; is caping and salting sufficient if we will be out in camp for 1 week, or should I use Stop-Rot as well as salt? if so do I Stop-Rot and then salt? thanks

Turning the ears, splitting eyes, lips, and removing nose cartilage. Remove as much flesh as possible and salt. Make sure the salt gets into every little crease and fold. After 24 hours or so shake off as much loose salt as possible and resalt. If it is warm out do this in the shade and make sure the cape is on something slanted so the moisture can run off.
If you decide to use Stop-Rot it is applied to the green cape prior to working it. Although many animals have been treated in the above fashion without this new product with good results, it is probably worth getting some and taking it with you. Especially with the rave reviews it is getting. It sure can't hurt.
I'm sure Glen will comment on this issue. You can also check the seach feature (orange button) for more info.
thanks for the information. I will also do the "search thing"
I am also doing a drop camp next year and also thought about the bringing the salt idea, then a light bulb went off in my head! 4 hunters 4 caribou and the possiblitie of a few blackies and maybe a moose or two. Then the I figured out how much salt to bring! I would have to hire another plane drop for th extra 150 lbs of salt! I guess it depends on your hunt.
You feal It is Better to loose the Hides, Than pay for a bit of dunnage. why not leave the beer home, and then you will have room for the salt. Bet you will find a way to get the antlers out though.
Hedhuntr, getting to camp on horses. I can have outfitter take in salt for us with our groceries. we are only looking for mule deer and maybe a black bear. Good luck on your hunt.
with someone making rude comments! B, I was starting to hear what you were saying until I got to the beer part. I said a packhunt and just wanted to explain that sometimes you need way to much salt to be feasable when you are walking 6-10 miles a day and you may not even have a permanant camp (in my case) Ras, good luck on your hunt
