I mounted dear heads years ago for a hobby. Three years ago I had a Pope & Young bear mounted by a professional Taxidermist. I have taken it back two times because it smells very bad when it gets hot and humid. He said that he injected it with some chemicals and that it should take care of the smell. I know he didn't flesh it properly, so when the conditions is right the smell comes back.
What can I do?

John, I don't know if theres anything you can do about this mount. You can try spraying it with febreeze or one of the stronger odor killers, but if the smell is because the bear wasn't fleshed properly,I don't think these will help.Try contacting Bruce Rittel or Mark Daniels from Knolblochs.
Almost guaranteed the animal was mounted with DP. The heat and humidity are classic symptoms here. This happens when all the fat has not been properly removed and the hide isn't washed even if it has been. If the mount smells like rancid grease, that's the rest of the puzzle solved. It COULD possibly be rehydrated and remounted, but bear skins don't take such treatment too well. fortunately the P&Y records depend on the skull and not the skin as I don't think the future is too rosy for this skin ever being remounted properly.
