small holes in deer ear skin

I peeled the cartilage off of a deer tonight and i it appeared to be some sort of bug damage on the inner ear skin. There was small holes all over the ear skin but whatever did it didnt go deep enough to put holes in the cartilage. As i peeled the cartilage off, all the holes show now and it looks like swiss cheese. The deer still has ticks attached to it in some places that havent fallen off yet but they are all dead. I believe that ticks may have caused this and wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this. Thanks

I have experianced what you are talking about. Mostly in the warmer season like the beginning of archery. Once i would cape a deer out for mounting and place it in a cold wash. nothing but ticks would come crawling out of the head and necks of the capes. It is very common ,Worst thing i think that i have ever seen was a nice tear duct gouge from the buck i was mounting ,fighting.
wasnt visable from the outside. But once i began to flesh the inside of the face around that eye. boom nothing but sweet yellow, gravy, hahahaa, anyway. Do your self a big favor and always, wear good sergical, or comercial type rubber gloves whenever your fooling with any type game animal. best of luck. Keep mounting Ray
