check with your local hunting club

Make out a pamphlet of sorts, show them your pictures, offer a "learners" price and I'd bet you'd find takers if your pictures reflect decent work. Or drive to a neighboring state, buy one there and drive back to California and get to mounting.

Why deer?

Why not do something like a coyote. Taxidermy is taxidermy. Start with something legal and work your way up to the hunt clubs. No begging here!

Never cross state lines to do what Hogger suggests, as you are a CA resident can't buy or sell a deer -- no matter what state you buy it in, if it gets to CA, violation.

i have

allready mounted small animals(fox's,bobcat)But nothing with horns or antlers. And im told i would have to receive the hides and antlers from inside california thus my post for mounting a deer for some one else.If some one gives me a cape w/antlers i would still need the same info as if i was providing a service to a hunter. So this is why its kinda hard to get started.Begging,no,Im a licensed trapper in CA so i can mount as any fur baring mammal as i want and i do know the laws pertaining to trapping.I didnt want to ask other taxidermist because it would be like taking money out of there pocket and again i can not buy any part of a deer.Im merely giving some one the opportunity to get a deer mounted for the cost of materials only.

...legally buy deer capes in Ca. I also live here. I have talked to both my local game warden and with those in Sacramento about this. You Can't buy antlers unless they are sheds or cut in pieces for crafts. So go ahead and buy a cape and sheds. The sheds may be a little more difficult to mount for a beginner

Just Last Week

I too live in California and just last week I had the same question about buying deer capes from an out of state supplier, so I called one of the investigating officers for the Fish and Game Department in Sacramento. I told her that I have some Mule Deer antlers that I would like to buy capes for from out of state and she siad that I was good to go. So despite all the questions about the leagality, it is 100% legal to purchase capes from out of state. If you still arn't satisfied I would suggest that you call Sacramento your self. Have a nice day.
