staining a rack

Submitted by steve on 9/6/05 at 2:24 PM. ( ) 205.188.117.6

i shot an early season north dakota deer in velvet. when the deer went down he damaged the velvet bad in the brush. i wanted to preserve the velvet but it was too damaged. i striped it off and my problem is that the rack looks unnaturally white. i have heard guys stain the rack. What would you do to make the rack more natural looking? if you have used stain then what color and brand.

I have never tried it, but I know Research Mannikins has a artificial velveting process they can do on your antlers. It may be worth trying. I saw it on a set at nationals and it was pretty good. Just a thought.

Here you go!

I've seen them both and I would have to say that if the velvet is damaged that bad and you had peeled it off without a taxidermist looking at it first, you might want to try the link below. This procedure works pretty good, especially on busted up racks or repair jobs. I live in Fargo, ND and get bucks in with velet due to early season bow hunting. Alot of the times the velvet can be saved easier than you think. I would recommend the next time you shoot one in velvet let a taxidermist make the decision on wheather you can save it or not. Congrats on taking a velvet buck. If you have any questions feel free to drop me a email.

Research's velvet is awesome. I've had it done for myself and for customers. Send pictures or a piece of the velvet with the antlers and they'll match the color.

thanks
