I seen a nice buck today but was not a shooter, he was about 3.5 to 4 yrs old, watching the deer i noticed a softball size growth on his white patch of the neck. Has anyone seen this before or mounted one like this. Would you eat the meat off this deer or not curious. How rare is this occurence. Lookin back on it now i probalbly would have pulled the trigger on him because of this problem. Other than the lump the deer seemed very healthy and alert.

last year my hunting buddy and i saw the same thing, but this white patch was in the middle of its back. My buddy took the little buck. What we found was a small tail growing out of the middle of its back. When we skinned it we realized the little buck actually had two spines, side by side. The abnormal spine was smaller and only half length. the buck now resides in his lodge. It is a great conversational piece

Came across one in my studio

it ended up to be a large tumor right underneath the lower jaw. The customer wanted the deer to look like that when it was mounted so we recreated the lump with clay. Customer sure was happy. Never seen another deer with one again.

on the outdoor channel, I forget the show as I was on the phone at the same time. But this whitetail buck, 3 year old, had a growth the size of a musk mellon just above the briskit. As far as I saw on the show, they let it walk.

could it be a goiter?

I saw that same show this morning - Hunting the Country. No one commented about the growth at all on the show, but it was hugely visible. If you see the show again, watch the deer's gait and mannerism. He was somewhat emaciated with hips and shoulders protruding, and he staggered when he walked, almost like he was sick or exhausted. Much worse than what you would expect in a rutted out buck. He had a nice rack, but I wouldn't have eaten him if I'd had the shot. And lord knows none of those guys were going to cull him to put him outta his misery.
