Importance of tumbling?

Is it really important to tumble hides after tanning them yourself. If one does not have a tumbler, is there another method one can use or can you mount without tumbling.

Get a 5 gal container with a lid. Put some grit or hard wood sawdust in it with the cape, seal the lid and roll it shake up for a while. Good job for the kids. I love my tumbler for hides, wouldn't be without one. If you are serious about taxidermy, I suggest you get one.

if you oiled the hide after the tan, you need to tumble to remove the excess oil left after the wicking time. Or a quick wash with a mild shampoo on the hair side, a quick rince to remove extra oil and shampoo, spin dry in the washer, roll up tight in towels for 15 minutes, then freeze or mount.
