I Picked up a bench grinder with a couple wire wheels 1 coarse and one fine, I wanted to know when thinning the cape are you using the wire wheel when cape is wet or dry? I'm using Krotann and tried thinning when cape was wet after nuetralizing and didn't have the best results, seemed like it just grooved hide somewhat and not that much material was comming off. Am I doing something wrong? and what kind of hand movements do you use? How hard are you pressing hide to wheel?
Thanks

The cape needs to be shaved down on a fleshing machine when it is wet and swelled. It has a blade with a lip on the edge. A wire wheel works good on birds.
hi,rays gotta video,he told me a year or two about the bench grinder,i like mine, but hes got the plan, its easy..........tim
Drop me an email and I will point you in the direction that works for me and that has been taught to me by a gentleman thats been using his for nearly 30 years.I also have a video I just put out on the set up and methoud. Hope I can help.
It will work with a medium wheel and the hide must be pickled. will not work once the hide is neutralized, plus that lets bacteria build up.
i see know that i read it again,i did the same thing, there is a real corse wirewheel that didnt do crap, and the bronze one is to weak for deer hides,it the silver one that looks like the bronze one that works for me,and i krowtan, nuetrlize, wash in tide ,rinse ,drip, wirewheel, krowoil, mount or freeze...have fun..tim
Hey Tim how much of the hide flys off when your thinning? and does it come off smoothy or leave tracks (Grooves) in hide. When I tried it, it seemed to only take off minnimal amounts ,,
as far as the meterial goes .The flying meterial all depends on how you have your machine set up. Yes its gonna fly if you dont have a shroud around it. I use a 30gal. plastic tote and have the grinder setting about 3 inches back inside the tote. Also helps when you have it mounted waist high. Now as far as the fleshing part goes. what I have found that works awesome for me is fleshing them with a corse wheel and green or fresh. Of corse thats nots always the case . Now if your gonna work with a recently thawed hide or cape. I found that once thawed . Washing it in some cold water and antibacterial dish soap for around 15minutes then rinse clean in cold water. I then will tumble for approx. 15 minutes. this makes my hide or cape nice and thick. and the meterial comes off almost as good as it would ifit were green. You gotta remeber also to never let the hide set in one place . yes your gonna get a grove. You have to keep the hide moving side to side. in approx 4to 6inch swipes.I always start at the neck and work my way down. make sure your grabbing the hide tightly between both hands and ease into the wheel. Side to side. the meterial should roll right off and downward for you.. As far as wheels go. Thats all I use is a very corse wheel when it comes to deer.I dont double up on my wheels. to cover more area. Its just a corse wire wheel for deer. and a soft brass for thinner hides. and the variable speed is where that all comes into play. Now if you wanna use the stone wheel you can do that also. as far as turning goes. pertaining to the lips, nose padd, septum, and you can even thin with the stone wheel. but We wont go there just yet.
Hey thanks for the info Could you email me your phone # I'd rather talk to you thwn try typing out info
