Hi
This is probably an easy question to answer for one of you experienced folks. I just took in a beautiful whitetail with a 26" neck. The woman who shot it carried it out of the woods on her ATV and unfortunately one of the tires was rubbing on the deer. Well it rubbed off all the hair in an area about the size of a volleyball right on the neck just above the shoulder. My plan is to cape it long and send it to the tannery. After I get it back can I cut out the ruined section and sew in a section from the same hide? This is my plan. I just want to know if this is common and if I can hide the repair.
Thanks for any advice.

Deer hair varies as much from body location to body location on individual deer as from deer to deer. There are going to be subtle color differences that you don't see now, but which will vividly be shown after you try to sew in that swath. I would hope you explained to her that her dumbass move might cost her additionally for a replacement cape.
i had to do that on a mule deer before and it came out fine, but i would have to agree with george. the hair color is different on different parts of the animal, and you would really have to pay attention as to how you cut the patch so the hair runs the same direction. now on something the size of a volleyball,i can almost be sure that it will be noticed.
dont waste your time - get a new cape now
