Whitetail eyes

when my mount dried, the hide seem to seperate from the glass eyes. Would you recommed super glueing the hide to eyes after a couples of days of drying. The major problem area would be the inner corner of the eye. I understand one has to fill these areas with various waxes, but mine seem to look very unnatural with all the filling. Pinning didn't seem to work very well either.

Glue?

Did you use any glue(hide paste)? Was the skin tanned or DP'd?

tanned and yes

the hide was tanned professionally. I always use hide paste, that common sense!

my guess is

that you arn't quite getting the eyes and lids thin enough, I use a dremel tool with a sanding drum to thin my eyes and I make sure that the lids are cut and thined clean down to the little yellow fat cells in the eye lids

My suggestion is to not walk away from the mount

I work my eyes with a stiff bristle paint brush until they are dried. That means that twice a day for about 3 to 4 days, I work the eyes to insure they're almost contacting the surface of the eye.

Hide nails

Place hide nails in each corner of eyes to prevent this and work it for a few days..

One other thing to consider

Jeff, A common mistake is to over clay the eyes in an effort to "use up" the skin in that area. Eye lids are like the rest of the cape in that they do better if allowed to lay in position but not stretched tight. Thin them very well, clay according to reference and use quality adhessive. A pin in the front corner is good insurance that the proper position stays put and like others said- follow up on the mount as it dries. Enjoy, Aaron H.
