This is my fifth deer mount (and my first bow killed deer). I've improved on deer a lot since I completed this one, and this time I used more reference photos. Please take a look and tell me what you think, I might enter this in the Pennsylvania competition this March just to learn what I'm doing wrong.

Just in case you need some info, this cape was tanned with McKenzie tan, and I used Ear Magic on the ears.
Not too bad for a beginner. I sugguest that you purchase some reference materials. You will see the corretions that need to be made once you compare the reference to this mount, and you will inprove on the next. Check out the archieves on nose texturing and paint schedules. This nose looks a little too black, although it hard to tell by the photo. All in all not bad, and with a little reference you will be flying with the pro's. Good Mounting !
Nice looking mount. You say you used ear magic. What can you tell me about your process?
Thanks,
Mike
the ear magic is goog stuff huh
im adding veins to mine now
take some weed eater string
sand it and place it in there
you can move it around tell it starts to kick
the ears are thin and if you have a short hair deer
on alert the veins make it look pretty good
paul e
salt first always.
The mount looks pretty good and it would be typical commercial work by most taxidermists in my area. Here are some of the problem areas that I noticed though:
The lip line looks a little ragged and the back corners should be turned up a little more.
The eyes are a little to wide open and need some finishing touches. Did you airbrush them?
The ears look pretty good overall, but they seem a little slendor at the bases and I always like them to match from one side to the other, which is a sign of attention to detail. I know that this is a personal preferance and wild deer rotate their ears independently, but it just looks better in my opinion to match.
Good job on lining up the brisket and leg pits as I rarely see that done right these days by beginners (or even some pros).
If u arte thinkin of competition i cant tell but it would be a good idea to use a septum for competiton thell hit you for that but overall not bad.
Looks prety dam good for a 5th mount
It is said that a lady never tells her age. But I ain't no lady.
Unless she's had a birthday lately, Nina is 14 years old.
Some of her "early works" are on Critics' Corner at this address:
