I HAD A GUY BRING ME A WHITETAIL FOR A SHOULDER MOUNT. NOW I HAVENT BEEN DOING TAXIDERMY VERY LONG, BUT I HAVE BEEN A HUNTER FOR 20 PLUS YEARS. I HAVE NEVER SEEN TICKS LIKE THIS ON A DEER. I DONT EVEN KNOW HOW TO DESCRIBE IT OTHER THAN SOLID TICKS. THERE WAS NOT ONE SQUARE INCH OF THIS CAPE THAT HAD LESS THAN 10 OR 15 TICKS. NOW FIRST OF ALL,IS THIS MORE COMMON THAN I THINK? AND SECOND, WHATS THE BEST WAY TO REMOVE THEM? I USED A FLEE COMB BUT THIS TOOK FOREVER. PLEASE HELP.

Just cape it out, tape around you're shirt sleeves and go at it. Then freeze it good for a week or two. Freezing over night wont do it. This will not kill them, you need to leave it rock hard frozen for at least a week. Then process as normal, shake them out after the tumble. I have seen only one tick so far this year.
get a big plastic bag and put the whole head in it b4 skinning - get some raid and fog the inside of the bag - let set for 45 minutes - this will kill upwards of 97% of ticks - if its really bad open it in 30 minutes gas 'em again and leave another 30 minutes - i have used this method for years
I have used the bag method for years. It works and makes caping the deer a whole lot more relaxing.
i just ignore em, the salt brings them out then the pickle kills em.
terryr's method seems good, but i thought raid always left a smell and residue and didn't do quite as good of a job and is bad for your own lungs, so i like to use a dairy bomb, which you can get at a farm supply store.
Does the trick.
I put the whole head in the freezer for 4 weeks anything shorter than that the ticks can come back to life. Did this two weeks ago, put the deer on the table left the room for a hour come back to see 30 ticks crawling on the table, in the freezer it went. Damn things give me the Hibby Jibbys. Specially the ones blown up to the size of a marble.
