Got a question about hide pastes. Once again I have been using DP since I started doing taxidermy and I have always used 3006 White Lightning Caulking. I did mount a tanned elk cape and a tanned Deer cape and I beleive I used Epo-Grip as the hide paste.
I am sending the majority of my capes to the tannery this year in order to save time and allow for a little longer working time that I other wise wouldn't have using the DP'd capes. Can someone recomend a good hide paste. One that will allow a little longer workig time but will set up well and fast enough that detail will not oull out of the mount. Preciate it. MichelleW

nuff said... just be sure to get the original formula, the new one that everyone wanted to be just like Buckeye is crap.... and order it direct from them, much cheaper that way
id stick with these two
most times i just use the epo epoxy
you just have to learn how to use it
it took a couple of times to get the hang of it for me
youll have to adjust the way you do things a little
i know your probably used to smearing the whole form
then sliding a very elastic d.p. skin over the form
things will be a little different when you get the capes back tanned
you wont have as much stretch as a d.p. cape
but if its shaved good and worked(stretched back to size)
you should get close to the original size
i slide the cape on first
then with a paint brush or gloves i put the epozy on
i just do the face first, mixing just enough in a paper plate to do it
after i fix the face up i put the horns on and epoxy and sew up to the small of the neck adjusting as i go
now at this point your home free with the rest of the cape on a third mix.
now i also bag the head when i move on to the third mix
when you get the hang of it youll get more efficient
now if your really worried just use the epo water base up to the small of the neck and switch to the epoxy for the rest
have a blessed Christmas
I use buck eye supream and derma grip red label. Derma grip makers AAt are here in my home town, I think buck eye may have a little more holding power but both are good. Let me know if you need contact info on derma grip.
Buckeye Supreme and really like it.., tho' I've thought about trying Epo-Grip this year..,
I will never use epoxie again as it is way to sticky to taxi skin easily.Anyway Killer Glue was.
