does a tanned cape need to be oiled for mounting, i have heard arguments both ways

If your just going to mount the cape there is no need to oil it if you tanned it right
All tanned skins should be oiled after tanning whether or not they will be mounted. Oil helps keep the leather flexible and you will get more stretch. All of the tanneries oil all skins.
John is absolutely correct. When skins arepickled and tanned soluble proteins are removed. The oil helps replace these proteins and helps stop shrinkage.
