Or make sure you have a market that will recooperate your expenses. And get a contract that gives you the legal claim to recooperating your costs after a certain amount of time-- say 30 days and two notifications or one registered letter notification.
So you can sell it on ebay or use it as a show piece in a store or something
I think you aren't far behind where I was not to long ago. Some simple research would give you the answers you are looking for. First of all without you telling what state you are from makes this? impossible to answer. Some states allow you to sell the mounts but if you are like me then you can use the experience and displays. Some states only allow you to sell the mount after a certain amount of time and for only the service charge. Some states may not have any laws, and others say tough you are stuck with it. You need to check you state to see if you even need a license. Did you know that some states make you charge sales tax? I bet you need a business license regardless of taxidermy permit or not. May even need some rezoning or at least zoning approval. I also think you need to contact YOUR DNR to get as many of these questions answered as you can. Then your county business license office, it may even be you county tax collectors office. You will want to have a contract.
Get to work but have fun or you may end up like a lot of guys that get stuck in the same routine and burn out. That last statement is just what I have seen here, no first hand knowledge just reading old post. One other thing, and I could use my own advise for this next one because I am just as guilty, ask question like this in the beginners category. Your answers may come easier. The only reason I don't stay in beginners area is cause I want my ass beat if it needs to be and I know that if I ask a question and It goes unanswered then I have over looked it in the archives. or they want me to leave (lol). anybody reading this Its not going to happen I like it here to much.
Later Jerry good luck once more. Oh yeah To give you the best answer I can once again. Get at least enough deposit to cover supplies or do it at you own risk. Like I said earlier I ask for 50% but don't demand it but do get at least 120.00 so I can cover cost. down the road I will demand 50%.
I used to be a little shy in asking for deposits...but my wife wasn't! If somebody dropped something off when I'm wasn't in, she could get that money. We laugh about it a lot, but after getting stuck with several items, this old Irishman toughened up. I have a sign in my shop...only a blind man would miss it: 50% DEPOSIT ON ALL WORK. My standard line to close acquaintances is "I cannot run this shop out of my back pocket, when I was a smaller operation I could, but not now". I had a guy bring in $4400 worth of work a couple of weeks ago. He did not even flinch at paying 50%! Now Jerry, you have heard from two "Joey's"...ask for and get deposits...if they say they will get back to you in a few days, let that specimen stay in the freezer til you get some money.
