I noticed today when I took the pins out of my deer mount rust hand acumulated on the fur. I was wondering how to det the rust off? CLR? I also used a hide paste that is very tacky, when it dries it is like sand paper, and it is all over the hair along the seem on the back. What would I use to get this off as well? thanks a bunch

Rust

You can try any rust remover but becareful for you'll have to clean up those areas good so you don't damage the fur in the long run.
As far as the paste goes read on it. If it's a water base paste most of the time water will rehydrate the area and you can comb it out. Paint thinner aslo work on certain water base glues. The worst to use is lacquer or acetone which is dangerous and you need to do it out side.
Next time you mount up a deer keep an eye on the paste and where it get to. The best time for clean up is while the paste is still wet.
Instead of using pins to pin those areas in a good hide paste like Epo-Grip and a few others really don't need pinning. What you do do is twice a day you go back to your mount and press in the detail areaa that you have been pinning. You'll get a much better look and no rusted pin marks.
If you still insist on pins which is fine start using stainless ones or get yourself some 1/4 necking materail and use this in the pinned area. Hope this solves some of you delma.

don't put the paste up so high

I guessing that the reason you are getting hide past all over the back of the cape is because you are putting the hide paste to high. there is on reason to submerge the entire form in hide paste. I suggest putting the hide paste aboue half the way up the sides of the neck and then leave the rest be. if you aren't careful you can still get hide paste on the hair when you first put the cape over the form as well. i take upholstery pins and pin the cape to the back of the form to hold it there until i get to sewing it up so the hair doesn't get into the paste. as far as the rusty pins go I have to agree with Frank. there is really no reason for needing pins. for the first few days at least you should be checking your mounts regularly. for example, the tear ducts are going to start opening up as your mount dries. you should be pushing them back in place continuously while your mount is drying. same goes for other detail areas. sometimes i use one pin in the front corner of the eys and some times i'll use the three pin method but generally with those i will push them in far enough where i can hide them with apoxie.

Use a paint brush

Do like Topdog said and don't put the paste near where there is going to be a seam until that part has been patially sewn up. Then using a cheap 2-3" (this was George Roofs idea) paint brush slide it under the seam with the brush lightly coated with paste. I also mask the seam at the back of the cape until I start sewing it up. I also use the short Y incision and know that if you are cutting your capes all the way down the back you will be more susceptible at getting more glue on the cape because of its dangleing near the neck area. What type of glue are you using? I use Buckeye supreme and found that when it dries it is easy to brush out.
