Keystone Fur vs Carolina Fur

Submitted by Charles E on 1/29/06 at 6:59 PM. ( ) 66.182.80.130

Looking for someone who has recently used both Carolina Fur and Keystone Fur Dressers with an opinion of who they like the most. I looked in the archives and found some stuff from last year - just looking for someone who has used both recently. I know everyone has a bad experience somewhere. I am looking for a new tannery and have heard some good things about both, as well as the Wildlife Gallery. Thanks in advance!

There is really no comparison here! Davids sling is barely functional, in my opinion. I couldnt help myself. Charles, you are comparing Wal-mart and 7-11.

Carolina Fur

I have not used Keystone Fur Dressers but I have used Carolina Fur Dressers for the last 4 years and I would highly recommend them. I have not had one item damaged in those 4 years and every shippment has been on time. I use their wet tan for all of my lifesize and shoulder mounts. It has excellent stretch and is shaved thin and when the mount dries the hair is naturally fluffy. You do have to wire tie the ears on deer, elk, bear, etc. to avoid the ears from being damaged in the tanning process. They also offer advice on how to mark shipments so that they can deliver the tanned hide back to you in the least amount of time. If you contact Carolina Fur they will send you instructions on how to punch the hides and what preparations you need to go through to send the hides to them and how to mark the shipments. Good luck.

I think you would be considered biased on this one, for obvious reasons!

Charles, I have used all three of the tanneries you just mentioned, all within the last bit of time. All three are very good. All three have a very good product. I think it comes down to preference. My advice would be to let them know you are trying them out, one against the other, and see what your samples come back like. I know for certain that all three will please you.

And before anyone asks, no, I no longer reccommend tanneries, so this is as far as I go! Best of luck!

I had used Carolina for about three years and had the same on going problems with slippage and damaged capes consistantly. Keystone was used for about two years until they sent some capes back that were cut up by the shavers and then sent to me without telling me. With the quality I produce in my shop, there is no room for these kind of screw-ups. Atleast call me and tell me the situation. Maybe then things could've been resolved. Too bad they both lost about 250 pieces a year.

Ive been using Wildlife Galleries for the past 2 years. I really like their tan, it has good stretch and actually smells good. Their turn around time is a little long though but hey, its gives me time to work on birds and fish while I wait for my hides. Never tried the other 2 tanneries. Good Luck, Kevin

These guys are the best. I've used them for everything this year. Unreal stretch on wet tans. turn around time cannot be beat. everything is always combed out perfectly. I would reccomend them to anyone that is looking for a tannery.
