I have been thinking of doing a deer mount myself in the near future. I really could sit and look at deer for hours. My question is, how come every dang mount I see the ears are straight out of the head? They just don't look realistic to me at all. I think a deer with his ears turned back looks so much more realistic. I was looking through my Van Dykes and a lot of the deer are mounted with the ears straight out. what is everyones thoughts on ear position? I know just the slightest change in position can mean the difference of a whitetails attitude. Maybe its just personal choice, but I much rather prefer a laid back ear.

make the ears tell what the deer is thinking, or doing. sometimes I will make the ears lead the turn in a left or right turn mount. with this I also make the eyes lead the turn. sometimes I will have the ears focused on the viewer. sometimes I will leave the ears relaxed. it all depends what I want the mount to say. an alert pose would look dopey with the ears relaxed.
