Is it ok to wash deer capes raw, before I pressure tan them. A little help please.

Here is how I do my capes with the autotanner, turn ears, split lips, run across fleshing machine to get off meat and fat, wash in Dawn, rinse, then rinse in Downy, put in auto tanner. I am sure some will disagree, but I have used this method for many years and have yet to lose a cape. The only exceptions are bobcat, fox and coyotes, I usually put them in the auto tanner for 1 1/2 hours before I turn the ears.
I don't use a autotanner but do wash my raw capes from time to time. I use Pert-Plus then blow dry completely.
