I have a problem keeping the hair tucked up to the antler bur. It seems to want to drop durring the dring period. I put a ring of clay about an inch below, sew it up tight, push the clay up against it. I even tried to put nails in about an inch below the burr. should they be closer or what should I do different. PLEASE HELP!

After sewing,I carefully put "Smooth Out", 2 part epoxy, under the antler base. Then work the hide up to it. Wipe off accidents with lacquer thinner. Stays put!
Put a small roll of apoxie sculpt around each antler burr and that should solve your problem.
Use apoxie sculpt instead of clay and you'll never have a problem again. Use a good glue too. When it's sewed up push the skin up like you do with clay and it'll hold it tight... good luck
sounds like you may not be sewing it tight enough around the burrs.....
i have seen that mentioned over and over in these forums but i cant figure out how it would work.
the skin is wet and the apoxie wont stick to wet materials. it will set up in a couple hours but the skin takes weeks to dry. so how will it hold the skin up there?
or does it just get pushed up against the burr, sandwiching the skin between......and then setting up hard so the hair cant pull back out from between them?
I'm not sure how the apoxie sculpt works with the wet skin, but I can say this. If you put a roll of it around the burr like the others above have stated, I will guarantee you that it will stay in place.
I personally use a roll about the diameter of a pencil, and it works great!
Thanks for all the help.
bondo to rebuild muscle , Epo-Grip epoxy hide paste , go in each side of incision at the antler bases and pull tight then knot . then you have the hide tight and can continue sewing the rest of the y without worrying about the bases getting loose,i saw don stephens do it in a seminar last year but never tried it until this week when a friend i'm helping get started saw another taxidermist friend do it we tried it and it seemed to be the way to go . Epo-Grip is the real deal.
Aftet you put the apoxie sculpt around the base of your antlers and have sewn it it tight a few nails will hold everything in place until the apoxie sets, then the nails will hold the hide until that dries. pull your nails when all is dry.
