Lots of reference! I use a molded nose that used to be sold by Buckeye Mannikins.McKenzie has it in their new catalog on page 552. It comes apart so you can see inside. I use a Dremel tool to cut out the foam. Picture books help too.....John

If its for commercial work then you cant beat speed septums; their quick, look great, and easy to install. If its for a competition, I would use a replacement nose.

For commercial

I grind out the nostrils with a dremel and riffler files. Then I coat the inside with mod podge to smooth out the voids in the foam, then I paint inside there. That's it, I don't use a septum unless i grind a hole through to the other nostril.

Replacement all the way

I would have to say that the replacement noses are the best and saves time and in turn MONEY. If you were keep track of the time needed to get a nice septum you will find that it takes far longer to do that then use a replacement nose. I have been using Hilton Epply replacement noses. I always paint the inside to completion before installing. Now, if you are a beginner then I would say you will learn more by using lots of reference and sculpting your own, then finish with apoxie-sculpt. Do this until you have several under your belt, then use replacement noses.

Remove the nose

I remove the nose from the form, use a template to dremel from the back side, then I dremel the nostrils and completely remove the septum. I have a quick insert septum I cast in a flesh color to slip into the nose, alittle colored epoxy, smoth with water, paint, seal, reattach nose to form and your ready to mount. I do this on every deer I mount.

Replacement nose for commercial work?

This response submitted by Hedhuntr on 2/25/06 at 1:10 PM. ( ) 67.84.147.161

I know you guys are going to bash me for this but I can't see doing 75+ gameheads a year and replacing the noses on every one. Now if your getting $600 and up for heads then all the power to you but good reference, a dremel, epoxy sculpt and some small files is all
you need to creat a really good nose. I recently did a little survey and showed maybe half of my customers (35 to be exact) the difference between the rear inserted type septum and or a replacement noses compared to the speed septum method and explained that the replacement type would be more $ and all but one was willing to spend the extra money for a competition quality septum system. So if your into spending 20 + hours on a whitetail mount and doing 10 a year and wanting to do the absolute best job possible then go for it! Just my 2 cents

I use a use a lip tucking tool to dig out the inside of the nose all the way through. I pretty much make a big hole. Insert my speed septums. Mount the deer. When I go to finnish it out I sculpt all the inner nose detail in with Q-tips and another little lip tool I have.

When i paint the nose I mix my own color. I rely don't have a set mixing % but the colors I use a Flesh, a little Black, and Bass belly white. I just mix til it looks right. It's the closest thing I have fould so far for nose color.
