What about fleshing and repairing a tanned cape?

I charge $40.00

This is what I do:

Thaw
Turn lips, nostrils, eyes, ears with a scapel
Pressure wash cape, excluding face
Wash in washing machine with Era + Lysol
Towel dry
Tumble for 30 min
Flesh & shave entire cape on fleshing machine
Re Pack & Re freeze

I have 2 1/2 hrs per cape invested + epuipment & supplies. I thought $40.00 should be a minimal price...I was just curious what others charged.

I have seen it all!

$75.00

I charge $75.00 to completely flesh & shave a whitetail cape (includes splitting lips, nostrils, eyelids, & turning ears). When taxidermist gets cape back its ready to mount (if using dp) or tan.

Some may seem surprised at the price, but it doesn't take much thinking to realize that a properly fleshed cape is a significant contribution to a quality mount. Also, its one of the steps that so many don't like to do or fail to do properly.

you to get a green cape ready. I am doing these for guys who use DP only. Are there any ways I can shorten the time of hands on capework.
I don't think I can get $75.00, but its a lot of work for $40.00...helps the cash flow though.

you could quit pressure washing

that would knock some time and expense off your process. i dont really see why its necessary to do it if you are just going to shave them on the wheel anyway.

im surprized that washing them in the machine doesnt beat the hair out of them.

I just can't picture

one man doing 10 capes/day. I would be happy with half that. I must spend way too much time on facial detail with a scapel. I am fair with a fleshing machine, but I still spend 1 hr/cape on the fleshing machine. Again I must go too slow on the face...just do not like to cut holes around nostril and lips. Will more practice speed me up?

My customers drop their capes off, most of the time frozen. I take them to my friend. He skins, fleshes, shaves and tans. I get them back, sew up any holes, pare around eyes, nose, lips and clean the skull of flesh. Turn around time is one to three weeks. My total price is $40.00. I have it good and I know it. I offer more money but he says no.
