If you freeze it, and thaw it out wont it already be wet?
after coming out of krowtann i flesh and then check if will fit form i ordered - i order the exact form that fits the carcass b4hand - if it is too small i flesh again and oil and let set overnite - i wash hide then and mount - it will stretch to original size - i have oiled and gained as much as 4"
if hide is the right size and i am ready to go i mount then - if i have to wait a couple of weeks i will freeze - if i have to wait 2-3 days i throw it in a plastic bag (to keep from drying out) and lay it on the workbench - it is tanned and will not slip if instructions have been followed - i recently mounted a kt coyote that had been sitting on my owrkbench for 3 weeks - it is marvelous stuff
If you are just going to Krowtan? Yes, I know the Krowtan militia will be here bashing the forms I have sculpted in the past. In an attempt to make me see that they love the stuff. But lets look at this from a purely scientific standpoint. Tanning and I mean all true tanning works on an acid based cellular modification. Most tans work in the 4.0 to 5 range. Pickles run around 2. in Fact the term Tan came about because tannic acid was used. Krowtan has a pH of around 8 I think 8.3 if my memory serves. So when you pickle a hide. Then krowtan it. All you are doing is neutralizing the pickle. if you krowtan without a pickle you are alkaline preserving. Which will preserve a hide. However. Care to take a guess what the pH of Borax (the main ingredient in DP) is? Yup you guessed it 8.0. So basically Krwotan is nothing more than liquid Preservative LP.
If it had a PH of 8, then why would you have to neutalize ? It is an acid, and it works very well.
tenbears you have been sniffing too much dry hide paste! re read the krowtan bottle! it is an acid ! if it had a 8 ph the hair would fall off in a day or so wouldnt you think?
Mine reads 1 straight from the bottle. BP
or Tenbeers?
Tenbears, your information shows a complete lack of knowlege about krowtann. It is a complete tan and the ph is around 1.5 - 2 when mixed properly. If you are so completely uninformed about a product, please keep your BS ramblings to yourself. Ken, krowtann is a fantastic product, locks hair, great strech and killer control of your hide when mounting and drying. Try it, you won't be sorry.
