What causes a Dry Preserve cape to shrink more than a tanned cape?

See the orange button to the left labeled "search". click and then type in your question, maybe "DP shrinkage" "tanning shrinkage"

I wet tan and DP both and I have more shrink from wet tanned capes than I dp my DP'ed capes.

When properly fleshed and a good adhesive used a DP hide will mount up just like, if not better than a Tanned cape. And they wll last just as long.

I have seen folks argue both ways on the DP/Tanning argument and after doing both for MANY years I would rather mpunt up a DP'ed cape.

Been doing taxidermy 30 years, I have used most tans out there, I own a magnum auto tanner (which I really like) I also use a commericial tannery for a lot of my African stuff, but I must say I would rather DP than anything else. Simply 100% success with it. Never lost a single cape, not even a fox. And that is many years and THOUSANDS of mounts. Anyone who says it is no good is simply inexperienced>
If your capes are shrinking,to much, you are not thinning enough and not using a good paste and that is regardless of what method you use.

well i use it on the small stuff but

in my experience i get a hell of a lot less shrinkage with a properly tanned cape
but i guess with epoxy coming into its own
and my experiance with stop rot and acid/brine combo lately
things are a changing
i love it for the small critters i will admit
less problems with the ears and all
if it works it works
but i still prefer a tanned cape
have a good one

Key is...

I used DP in the past and now tan. The key to it is that the tanned cape can be thinned better, thinner, and it dosn't shrink as much. I personally cannot thin a DP cape as thin as the tanned. Just my two cents !

if you have more shrinkage with tanned capes.....

Then you are not thinning those capes good enough. You can have success using dp to mount and not have the hide fall apart but the shrinkage after years on the wall ,its just not a pretty sight,I helped my dad for 15 years mounting with dp,the capes are now 25-30 years old ,thinned as well as you can using dp,thats why I went to the dark side,my dad too,we tan all our big critters, small stuff dp is just fine.By the way,all you fans of dp,use the orange button, see how many folks who had problems losing hair on their capes-dp.

my take

The main disadvantage with a DP cape is that they tend to crack more in the face, especially the nose and around the eyes. The problem is made worse when the mount is subjected to misstreatment.

Wet to dry state .

As water evaporates from the skin the skin molecules are drawn closer together. Water molecules take up space in the skin structure and when they're gone the solid stuff wants to close up the gap. Whatever method is used a good hide glue will minimize the distortion. And I had plenty of problems until I started useing Headlock around the eyes, nose and mouth. But no matter how you do it the mount has to be watched until dry to control shrinkage.
