We got our Ear Magic today, we just tried to use it on a whitetail mount, we mixed equal parts (1 oz of each) stirred just to mix it up good, with in 2 minutes we could tell it was going to set way too fast...within 3 minutes it was so hard we couldn't use what remained in the cup and by 5 minutes it was as hard as a rock...any ideas on what we did wrong, or any suggestions to keep it from setting so fast?

Angie, I'd almost bet you mixed enough for BOTH ears in a small container. BAD. Mix only what it takes to do one ear and do NOT mix it where the depth of the epoxy exceeds one inch. Mixed in thicker batches, the chemicals react to each other much MUCH quicker. You only have about 10 minutes to work it as is, so don't try to do too much with each mixing. You can refrigerate it to slow it down, but it will get really thick and hard to mix when it's cool versus when it's room temperature or above 70 degrees.
Thanks George, you were exactly right, everything you mentioned above is what we did, we mixed enough for both ears and it was in a small dixie cup and was about 2 inches deep. We'll know better next time.
Thanks
and grab the mix with seperate tongue depressors or what ever your using to mix it with
it takes me literally no more than a couple of minutes to apply and shape
now you must have water handy for excess and overflow
i like to put a little hole at the very tip
and push the over flow if any and air out the tip
wash it and its done
it takes a little practice but its a great product

We've found through experience that it only takes about a heaping tablespoon of each side of Ear Magic to do what would be considered a medium ear. Like Paul said mixing it on a flat surface like a paper plate will also help control the cure time which should be about 7-10 minutes whne used in a thinner layer like an ear.
Anymore questions please give us a call we will be glad to help. 800-888-2467.
What do you mean by "a heaping tablespoon of each side of Ear Magic"?
Are you saying a heaping tablespoon of Part A and then a heaping tablespoon of Part B and then mix (which would be two heaping tablespoons for one ear)? OR....
Are you saying that you should take equal parts of Part A and Part B and when they are mixed it will equal about " a heaping tablespoon" in size for one ear?
I have been trying to use the product but I am also having the same problems as above. I do mix it on a flat service but have still had problems with it setting too fast, it not wanting to even distibute throughout the ear, easily breaking, etc. Please help me if you can.
Thanks,
Mark
Use equal portions of parts A and B. A heaping tablespoon would be about a tablespoon and a half of each side for a medium ear.
One of the things that I think could be a problem is that too much time is being used in mixing the material. When we mix Ear Magic here at Newton Supply we place the portions to be mixed side by side to make sure that the components are approximately equal. If so your good to go on mixing. I use an artists trowel knife to mix with which has a thin flexible blade of steel, a very handy tool. To mix, I scrapeup one side from the mixing surface and combine it with the other side mixing it back and forth to where mass spreads out to a fairly thin layer. Then re-gather the material up into a pile by scraping with the blade edge of the trowel knife. Then mix again the sameway about three times. This takes less than 30 seconds to do. That should leave you with about five minutes to put the Ear Magic into the ear pocket and shape your ear.
One of the methods of application is to have the ear turned so the Ear Magic is basically buttered over the cartiledge then turn the skin. The other is to form a pocket like most taxidermists do when using bondo placing the Ear Magic into the pocket and then working the material throughout the ear to proper thickness.
Once cured the Ear Magic will remain flexible for about a day or so. Card your ears as required or as if you'd used bondo. Go ahead and mount. Ear Magic ear can be heated to change its shape if you need to make a change.

Thanks Steve,
I have another question. You say to butter the Ear Magic over the cartilage and then turn the ear the right side out. My question is -how do you turn the ear back the right way WITHOUT getting the epoxy all over your hands, the cape, the outside of the ear, etc.
Thanks,
Mark
