how long does it take you guys to skin out a deer ear? takes me a long time with a razor blade & fingernails, if i had a lots to do i'd never get them done, i did try ear openers but got tired of busting threw, any ideas out there? thank you

Use your razor to turn it back to where there is nothing but skin, membrane, then cartilage. If you will cut the membrane closest to the cartilage completely across the ear, then you can push the membrane away from the cartilage. Just use you fingers like a pry. Take about 2 minutes. But remember, you will have to separate the membrane closest to the cartilage to get the ball rolling. Good Luck
It shouldn't take very long to turn the ears. I'm thinking that the reason you may be breaking through with the openers is because you are trying to use them to split the ear right to the very edge. Try this - use the openers to get the ear 'rough turned' enough to get it inverted, stopping a 1/4" from the edge. Tan the hide with that last 1/4" unturned, and then turn that last bit when you remove the cartilage. Remember to get the perfect ear just add a 'y' to the ears - then you get years of experience.
