I have just finished my thrird deer, and still having a problem havivg a small gap between the lips this is on a DP cape, any suggestions. I tucked them well and have no gap until it dries.
What are you using to make the lip line.
are you putting some thing in the bottom lip like clay or apoxie sculp so it wont shrink up.and are you putting a good glue in the lip slots.dp will pull alot and shrink so a good glue like Epo-Grip will keep it in place.
A cheap taxidermy job. Always use some glass eyes when mounting.
Joe T.- when you tuck, push the lip in so far that you do not see any skin at all, just hair should be showing, after mounting, go back often and push up the slack chin skin, push down on the top lip skin as it is drying, just before you go to bed, and when you wake up, during the day, what ever it takes and baby set that area until it does not move. You can use pins if you want pinholes to fill, use good glue, and maybe try a tanned cape next time. DP'ed skin will shrink more than a tanned one will, but they all shrink around the mouth. The best tip is to use a very thin lip slot cut with a jig saw blade, a butter knife, a lip tucking tool, or anything thin. You want to use the form to pinch the lips together to help hold them. A wide lip slot will let the skin fall out. You will have to work a little harder to tuck, but it will cut down the baby setting time.
In addition, use a good reference picture to see that the lip skin does not show on a real deer, or go to a deer park and take some close up shots with your camera if you need a picture.
