Does anyone out there know where I can get clean salt for my formic acid pickles? I'm located in Iowa. I used to get it from my local feedmill, but lately it's been full of corn, oats, etc. and lately some dark particles that smells like livestock medicine. Today I purchased some American Stockman brand salt from Tractor Supply that contained grey particles called Yellow Prussiate of Soda. This salt is supposed to be 98% pure. I'm pulling my hair out trying to get the cleanest salt possible. Any suggestions on salt brands and locations to purchase it? I just want clean salt that won't adversly alter my pH in my pickles. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Shannon.

The best salt to get is morton kleer or if you have to morton kiln dried. American stockman is dirtier most of the time, but sometime they are fairly clean, but all stock salts will have prussiate of soda in it. I don't think that's what the gray particles actually are, because morton has prussiate in it and there is no gray in it. Moad brand salt is pretty decent too, but really coarse. I would tell my local feed mill that you don't want rebagged salt, that sounds like what has happened. That should at least be able to order you morton salt, or tractor supply can order morton salt, if you are lucky enough to get someone to work with you. The worst case scenario would be if they wanted you to take 45 bags, which is what comes on a pallet. Your feedmill is just trying to keep costs down for the farmer so they use lower quality salt, but i still think if you explain to them what you are doing they could come up with some clean salt. If you are close to iowa city you can go to stutsmans which isn't too far from iowa city and get all you want from them.
I'm located in Guttenberg. (Northeast Ia) Do you know if prussiate of soda will alter the pH in a formic acid pickle, or harm my capes? Would you use the american stockman that I just bought? I took Joe Meder's gamehead course and we used the morton salt you described above, it was very clean.
morton also has a 50lb bag of salt called purex. Most of the studio's aroud me here in ohio use it. The local grainery orders it. Cost is $8 to $10 per bag. This salt is clean enough to use at the dinner table minus the iodine.
Thanks guys for your help. I also found out through the archives that prussiate of soda doesn't alter the pH in a pickle. This is trulely a great site, and lots of info. can be had just by hitting the orange search button! Thanks Shannon.
if you read the label you will see it prevent caking.
If you still dont belive it, just try a batch of salt water and check the pH.
So why the worry and hassle of something so easy to check on your own. Junior high chemistry, duh.
You'll just have an off white scum on your pickle or tanning solution. But it won't hurt anything.
[Expletive deleted] You! Quite frankly I,m sick and tired of some people's smart a** remarks. If you read all the posts you'd see that I already know that the anti caking additive doesn't alter the pH. Maybe you should read all the posts before you run your big mouth. If my demeanor doesn't please you, well too bad because I think you suck! And to anyone who reads this and doesn't like what I have wrote, tough sh#$! I have lurked on this site for years and am amazed at some indiviuals comments. There has been one person on this site that has been a real creep until lately. Recently his attitude has changed and I now respect his ideas. I don't care how long anyone on this site has done taxidermy, If you are going to answer my questions like an a**hole, please don't . Just do not reply. Some of you act like God and like to try to make people feel ignorant, when in all truth your probably taxidermy posers and your work looks like crap!
I have just read my post and see that it is a little harsh. I apologize to undertaker and anyone else that is offended by my previous post. But I do wish to say something, please do NOT respond to any of my questions if you are going to be a [expletive deleted]. I do not care to learn from anyone who doesn't treat people with a little respect. I don't care if your the best taxidermist in the world, if you are going to answer like a jerk, just please don't reply, just move on to the next post. It seems that certain people only reply to piss people off. This site is for helping people. I know what the orange button is for, and I always answer my own questions first by useing it. I have lurked here for quite sometime, for the simple fact that I do not like people making me feel retarded. I did not like undertaker's junior high chemistry comment, and snapped. Being the ripe old age of 35 , it's not likely that my skin is going to get any thicker. That is what people are told on this site when they don't like how certain indiviuals respond. Why should it be this way? Reply in a respectful manner. Nobody has a gun to their head making them answer questions. Once again I would like to say I'm sorry to all that did not like my previous post. I've wasted enough time here on this subject so I,m dropping it. Thanks to all who responded in an intelligent manner. Shannon
just understand that EVERYONE and ANYONE has the ability, if they have access to a computer, especially in a free society, to answer a post on this forum. You need to learn to take the good with the bad in life and simply dismiss the idiots of the world, or their responses that offend you. You will find that you will smile much more throughout your day when you take this approach.
