A form that fits?

Submitted by jrosbor on 5/10/06 at 4:29 PM. ( huntersdream3x@hotmail.com ) 64.73.36.192

Getting ready to do a shoulder mount that will be a straight full sneek with the head down. As if the deer were making a rub. I offerd to mount this on one of the fighting forms from Van Dykes but the customer wants it to be straight (no turn). Anyone know of a mfg that makes this type of form? I am content with just taking a standard full sneek form and doing some cut and paste work on the head but it sure would be nice to have a form already made for this. The size of the deer is 7 1/4 X 20 X 21.

Thanks! Joe

I had a similar request a few years back and couldn't find a form, Here's what I did. I ordered a semi-sneak form in the right size, I cut the form off abou3 inches in front of the backboard and rotated the neck 180 degrees and glued it back to the form/backboard. Then, with the head upsided down, I hung the form and cut off the head at an angle that would allow me to put it back on the neck with the bottom of the neck now becoming the top of the neck. Once I did that, I foamed in the gaps, sculped down the contour to match my new brisket area and mounted the deer. Worked for me.

Umm... Taxidermy?

If I could only have seen a picture of this being done! Cuz I am haveing a hellova time picturing it in my messed up head! I actualy had to check your IP for this one! Ok, The armpits would be still attached to the backboard. After it was rotated it's neck would be very low(like it was drinking?) And the neck contour would make it more square on the top which could be rasped down to a more rounded like shape and that square like shape that should be on the new bottom of the neck could be built up with foam, bondo, or clay if you don't mind the weight? The head I can only asume was cut off using a wedge of about 45deg? The wedge and head are then rotated back 180deg and glued back together with some prety stiff rods to help suport it? Last but not least, the whole speal is filled and filed to flow back together?

I like you George! You say Taxidermy is more a skilled craft rather than art. I just wonder if this type of form altering can be taught with words? I'm thinkin that I may need to get Cur and Glen to put this form back together after I get done hacking it up!

I think I am going to buy two forms for this deer. A full sneek and a semi sneek. Hack both of them up and see which one looks better after I am done.

Thanks for the info George! Like I said, I may just try this to see if I could pull it off. Joe

They will make you a form, with a moderate amount of waiting, but you will get exactly what you want...if they don't already have one already. They have specialty forms in their new catalog on page 31.

Good luck

Thanks Brad!

I think he may have one.

Joseph, read SEMI-SNEAK form

And alert form would give you the drinking pose. The semi-sneak would not be as radical. It works, or you could always do it as I did in 1958. You could use a 2x4 and excelsior to make one from scratch.

Isn't that what I said?

You took a semi-sneek? I would try the same thing with a semi-sneek, and try to just tip the head down on a full sneek form to see which one looked better.
