I have only completed five deer shoulder mounts. I am using the bondo method on the ears and I camt seem to get the ear thin enough. If I go to thin then I get missed spots. What other methods are available using the deers own cartledge? I would be greatful for any help.
Thanks,
Eric Turner

other than liners, ear magic, the same method as bondo,
I have one word for you Ear Magic. If done properly you can get an ear that is quite abit thinner than Bondo ever will get it. Also Bondo isnt an adhesive so the ear will drum eventually, with Ear Magic from Epo-Grip it stays the way you put it. All you do is wash the ear in Lacquer thinner, mix up the Magic, fold the ear halfway then put in a ball of Ear Magic about half again bigger than a golf ball in the pocket. fold the ear right side out, start forming and pinch the edges and put your creases in and let dry for 10min maybe more. There is no need for reinforcement in the Magic because it has silk strands in it that really give it some strength. If you put the two jars in warm water for about 20 minutes before you use it it really helps make it easier to mix. Theres a learning curve to it but when you finally get the hang of it you will love it and never go back to earliners or Bondo.
Since you've only done Bondo ears why don't you try taking out the cartilage and use an earliner? It's not that difficult, you're ears will be thinner and you just might like it better than Bondo.
Why wouldn't you go back to earliners? If done properly, you will get the thinnest ear possible with the least amount of drumming.
Earliners when used in conjunction with Epo-Grip fast set, is the best way to go..period.
Whenever you leave cartilage in, then add an additive like bondo, or ear magic inside, your ears will always be thicker than they were when the animal was alive.
It bugs me to see someone like yourself basically disregarding earliners, when in fact they are the best way to go.
Posts like yours cause beginners a lot of extra grief!
Well Jbest have you even tried Ear Magic, The guy said he wants a method were you leave the cartlidge in; or are to dumb to read. I used to use earliners, didnt like them. The only reason you use earliners is because thats all you have ever used and are to dumb and set in your ways to try anything else that might require a little thinking or cognative ability.I didnt say anthing bad about earliners, they are better than Bondo but I like Ear Magic better and if done properly (you will need at least a 20 I.Q. something you Jbest do not have) you can get an extremely thin ear. JBEst, you are a taxidermist that doesnt use any references, uses DP, and disappoints customers every year by taking their deer that they are expecting to resemble a deer when they get it back, then you return it to them with radar ears and eyes flat against their head, and the nose finished with a Dan-D-Noser. If you dont like Ear Magic thats fine I didnt critizize you for your choice so shut your mouth.
where can i find this ear magic it sounds like something i,d like to try , i went from liners to bondo becouse of torn skin & the white hair pulling out with the catilage , no dout liners are thiner and no drumming ,just over run with deer this past season ,time is $$ i looked in McKenzie NO ear magic or is it another name, thanks
YOu can get from W.A.S.C.O.. It is great stuff, dont listen to JWbest he is a bit of a B.HOle around here and tries to give people bad advice intentionaly.
Whitey, when you are though punching holes in your wall, open your ears and try to listen sport.
YOU made the comment reagrding not going back to earliners, and that's why my post was directed at you Einstein.
Let's take a poll on here shall we, and see who agrees on what the best method is for the thinnest, and best looking ears? I can GUARANTEE you that your idea would be the minority.
By the way, I came across some pics of your deer the other day..(some guy names whitey fisk in a different site anyway), and you my friend, are not one to give out advice on how to mount ears bud..quite frankly, your mounts looked like @ss, and that's coming from a beginner.
You wanted to get personal sport, so there is is. Have a nice day..lmao
I dont know if your telling the truth about the other website but if you would read those are from when I first started. I dont claim to be an expert (I've only been doing it for about 10 years) and I certainly not the best but I definately not the worst. Whitey Fisk came from Seinfeld it isnt my real name and I have also seen other people use this name, kinda like Mr T it is somebody in a movie. You can get thinner ears using liners if you take the cartlidge out but he wanted to keep the cartlidge in and outside of using soda cans and liquid fast, Ear Magic is the best. Its all water near a bridge.
thanks for the help ,never thought about WASCO ,and jbest whats the big deal ? if the ears look good and are a little thick so what ,Iv competed with both bondo and ear liners and also used the dan-d-noser and placed 2nd+ in professional division in pa of all places ,gagleano was the judge ,both deer were customer mounts in the same competition WAS VERY PLEASED SO WAS MY CUSTAMERS.
I just looked on that website and those pictures I posted up were posted so long ago the have been took off it was over 8 years ago. So either it was somebody else who likes Seinfeld and used that name or you're full of sh-t and Im pretty sure your full of sh-t. Im gonna search on Google and see if I can find that alleged website of my alleged crappy mounts which are not mine anyway.
There is no big deal..I offered my advice on why earliners should never be overlooked. I'm actually trying to help you believe it or not.
Removing cartilage becomes quite easy after a few ears, and I mentioned that earliners should not be disregarded, as you seem to be looking for a method to mount thinner ears.
The key is to have the ears dried nicely with a towel, and scratch the crap out of the liners with a stout or better yet slim ruffer. Liners combined with Epo-Grip liquid fast set make for a beautiful ear, that will not drum because it can't, and you will have nice crisp lines on the edges if they are opened properly.
I'm offering this advice, since as a fairly new taxidermist myself, this was great advice that I found in here, that was put out by some of the best.
There is plenty of info in here, you just have to watch who you are taking it from...that is where your own personal judgement comes into play.
Good luck with whatever you do.
I just searched "whitey fisk" on Google and the results are in, I found all kinds of entries from all kinds of categories by people named whitey fisk. I did find some pics of mounts by somebody using the name whitey Fisk and I have to agree with you they're not to sharp. Im done arguing with you so lets both shut our mouths.
It was a forum where some dude calling himself Whitey Fisk was bragging about the deer he had shot, and there were 6 or 8 deer hanging on the front of a log cabin, and another row of antlers below the mounts.
Like I said, the mounts looked like @ss, but if they were not yours, then so be it..I'm wrong, and I apologize.
Crimony..anyone else around here prefer earliners, or is it just me? lmao
Appolgy accepted its all water near a bridge. I do agree earliners put in with Liquid Fast set are hard to beat and thinner than ear magic ears if you remove the cartlidge and I would use it anyday over Bondo so sorry man.
Apology accepted here as well..Sorry this post had to get this way, but I was just trying to get a point across.
All good my friend...passionate views breed passionate responses!
Sorry if I stepped on some toes...skin em, mount em, and enjoy! - JB
EAR liners are the only way , why anyone would play around with bludy bondo is a joke , skin the ears , put in the plastic ear liners , staple the inside of the ears to the liner till the ears are dry , then remove the staples ,its just that easy.
