Air pocket between ear and cartilage

Submitted by Leslie on 6/18/06 at 9:12 AM. ( ) 71.85.1.72

I recently finished my second deer and used the bondo method for the ears. The hide seperated from the front of the cartilage, causing air pockets. I believe most would call this drumming. I did not seperate the skin from this side of the cartlige. So this isn't a question of the adhesive not holding, or bondo not being an adhesive. My question is how do I allow the heated air to escape from the back side of the ear so that it won't be forced to shift to the front of the ear? I think I may have squeezed the skin below the ears too tightly when the bondo was going through the heat cycle. This only happened on one side, the side that I didn't have to sew. Maybe the split in the other ear allowed the air to escape that way.

the split in the other ear more then likely did allow the air to escape. I use both bondo methoud and ear magic. I think you may find
the ear magic a bit more better a product to use down the road as it will give you a much more thinner ear and also acts as an adhesive. Alot of guys use ear magic and bondo both methouds work ,but as far as your issue with the drumming thats usually because of air being trapped inside that never escaped. Maybe next time around try putting in a few relief holes with a needle or exacto knife ,then when you apply your bondo and it squeezes out as you spread the bondo throughout the ear it can be romoved with a damp rag.

Best of luck to you. Ray

thank you

I had thought of trying ear magic, and maybe I will do that next time. I was a little scared to make relief holes, but I will definitely do that next time. Although as often as I have been having to sew the ears, it may not be an issue that often.
Thanks!

No problem Leslie

Deffenetly give ear magic a try tho. You will like the outcome.

working time is a bit like bondo depending on how hot your mixture is
but the outcome is much better. I would also try and avoid using to many relief holes when using the ear magic. Its very hard to get outta the hair. As far as bondo goes ,no problem. Best of luck to ya. Ray

You rough up and shred the inside of the ear ,front and back ,with a stout rougher.

I have used bags of ice to slow down the reduce the heat when the bondo is curing.
