I am getting ready to complete a mule deer mount in velvet. The buck had just started shedding it's velvet. The owner wants the mount with velvet falling off and the antlers colored like a fresh blood color. I am all set just need to color the antlers where there is no velvet. Can anyone tell me what color of paint I should use to get this fresh velvet shed bleeding color? Has anyone done this before. Any advice would be appreciated.

I've done this a couple of times, here is how I do it.
Mix gill red with clear latex caulk, stiple on exposed area with stiff bristle brush.
Use reference!
When the caulk is dry paint withcocoa and dark brown to look like dried blood.
Blend it all together by fogging entire area with cocoa brown.
I use them and Gelcoat to make "blood". Mike's colors were right on. I use titanium white, Alizerin crimson and Van Dyke Brown. I like the acrylic tube paints as you can actually "sculpt" blood droplets with the thick paint. After they dry, I airbrush out the edges just like he said.
Thanks george and mike for the response. I will give it a try!
