Shaving an already tanned cape

Submitted by RATTRAP on 7/9/06 at 6:04 PM. ( ) 69.250.233.126

Unfortuantely, I let an already tanned cape soak too long in a hide relaxer solution before mounting. It is now obvious, that I did not shave the cape thin enough. The skin swelled up and is now very thick like raw hide.

The question is this: Can I still shave the cape without having to worry about re-tanning? I originally used a pickle process, then McKenzie Tan. I have refrozen the cape until I can get an answer. I a m hoping that I can just shave & mount.

Thanks in advance for your help.

When the cape dries. Any skin is going to swell up after it has soaked in water for a while, making it seam that it is not thinned enough, even tanned hides. Just let it dry, but if you want to shave it some more, it will be ok.
