Cape Question

I am green to Taxidermy so bear with me. I got a buddy who asked me last night about if I wanted a cape that had been in his freezer for dang near two years now. He wanted to know if it was still okay, And I told him that the only thing that would probably be an issue would be hair loss. Is this correct. What do I need to look for in the hide to tell if it is salvageable, or Should they be disposed of after so long if they had never been fleshed or anything. Any help would be appreciated.

Should be OK

I just finished a mount using a cape that was frozen in the fall of 2002. Once it was thawed out I couldn't tell it from a fresh cape. It had not had the ears turned, lips split, etc. so I was concerned but I had no problems. Freezer burn could be a problem with a cape frozen for a long time but that can usually be corrected. Hope this helps.

How is is it wrapped

It all depends on how it was bagged and wrapped up. It also depends on if the freezer was a frost free freezer or not. A frost free freezer will take out more moisture inside the freezer than the ones that need to be defrosted manually. That dries out(freezer burns) the items in the freezer quicker. The main thing is if the bag the cape is in was sealed up and no holes. Then it should be fine.
