I have a question that I am unsure of the answer to. When doing a European Mount of a deer do you use the whole top part of the skull where it seperates from the jaw or do you have to cut the top part of the skull? I am attaching the skull to an oak panel. I have seen a picture of a skull mount that does not show the upper teeth of a deer at all. Unaware if the picture I saw was an artificial skull or not. Thanks for your answers..

Rob,
I usually do european mounts with the whole top portion of the skull, upper teeth included, no lower jaw. I have on occasion had a customer request leaving the lower jaw included but normally I don't use it. Hope that helps, good luck.
Mike
+1 on the upper with teeth. I have seen Euros cut before with no teeth and they look great. I have wondered if they used a band saw or how the cut was made even on both sides without trashing the skull?
I believe a belt sander would do the job of taking the skull down to that level, and leave it straight. After removing the teeth.I have ground down differant parts of the skull on mine and it's amazing how fast it takes it off.I think it would be almost impossible to get anything with horns though a band saw...Rancid
I heard on here before that a ture european mount is the top part of the skull, with the teeth and a portion or the skull right above the teeth cut off flat like ranchid had said. I havent had anyone ask yet to have it with the bottom jaw attached or with cutting the teeth and such off so Im not sure what to tell ya the bast way is, but I do like the way I do them very good. Good luck, Kevin
I never tried sanding a skull or sawing one either. Thanks for the tip! I could see where a table sander would easy to work with. The "sanded" skulls I have seen DO have an appeal.
I cut mine off just above the top teeth and it will lay flat against the panel you attach it to.
