Epo-Grip

Submitted by J Best on 7/24/06 at 9:40 AM. ( jwbest_75@yahoo.com ) 207.118.213.209

I use Epo-Grip on my mounts around the eyes, and in other drumming areas and it works like no other.
The problem I have is that one part of the mixture is always hard when I pry the can open. (I believe it's part-A..the clear one).
The shop is always 72 degrees, and I don't feel like raising the temp in there to 78 or better to get my Epo-Grip to the mixable stage.
What I normally have to do, is heat up part-a in the microwave for 10 seconds or so and bring it back in the shop, let it cool, then mix as normal.
The problem is that if it's mixed too soon at all after being nuked, it kicks in no time, and time becomes a real factor.
How do you other people get around this, or am I missing something here.
I am talking about Epo-Grip hide paste..Which I should have about four hours to work with.

Just simply put the lid back on your container and get some Buckeye Supreme hide paste. problem solved.

Buckeye is good, but it AIN'T Epo-Grip

J, you epoxy is nearing it's shelf life. To extend it, might I suggest a crock pot. Fill your pot with water and set the contain in it and turn the pot on low heat. This will keep it soft and mixable. If you're using tanned hides, Epo-Grip sells a great water based paste as well. If you're using DP, however, NONE of the water based pastes will work whether its Epo-Grip OR Buckeye Supreme.

with buck, I used Epo-Grip for a season and that was long enough. No matter how thin I applied the adhesive, it would sag and settle in the brisket. I went back to buckeye and needless to say I don't have that problem anymore. I know alot of people highly reccomend Epo-Grip, but I wouldn't, that's just me. If you taxi your cape around and have a good fit, buckeye supreme will work beautifully. I did a set of ears for comp, one pair with Epo-Grip and one pair with buckeye supreme and the buckeye ears had a softer more natural look to them with minimal finish work, even for a comp. mount.

Epo-Grip and Buckeye

This response submitted by J Best on 7/24/06 at 10:57 PM. ( ) 69.179.2.78

I use Buckeye Supreme on the mostly the entire mount. I use the Epo-Grip around the eyes in about a three inch diameter, and also a little down under the ears where I "used" to have a little drumming.
My capes are all tanned, so that shouldn't be an issue. In fact, the Epo-Grip works Excellent when I get it on the form. It's just getting the Epo-Grip ready to apply in a nice soft spreadable state, but not so warm (after microwave) that it kicks in much less time than it should that I'm having problems with.
I purchased it new last winter, but maybe it sat at the warehouse for awhile or something and is old as George mentioned - (It's been hard and chunky in the can since the day I opened it).
George, is the crock pot idea just something you do on occasion to get the two parts back to a mixable state?

Thanks for the responses - I'll follow up with Steve at Epo-Grip on this as well.

Yes

The epoxy has always had that glitch, it's the chemistry and the fillers. I know exactly what you mean as I literally FRIED a plastic mixing bowl with the microwave trick. It melted the bowl and like a fool, I tried to stop it from oozing out onto the table. Didn't take me long to figure out that wasn't too smart. In winter especially, I put the containers in hot water about an hour before I use them. If I have multiple mounts to do during the day, I use the crock pot so that it stays warm and not hot. I'm sure Steve will also suggest buying a small container of #30 liquid to mix with your glue. It doesn't gel as fast as the hide paste and will stretch out your quantities. I love it when it's the consistency of Country Crock margarine.

Epo-Grip Epoxy Hide Paste

This response submitted by Steve Steinbring/Epo-Grip on 7/25/06 at 12:04 PM. ( ) 70.148.166.138

Our Epo-Grip Epoxy Hide Paste works very well for tanned hides or DP applications.

However, one of the problems we have is the customers not properly stirring the product before use which is the first instruction on the containers. The product is designed to hang up on the mannikin up to 3/8" of an inch thick to allow for special applications like working in veins, waddles, and other detail areas.

In order to get the hide paste to an almost non-sag consistancy requires fillers which after time settle to some extent to the bottom of the container. If the product stored for extended periods of time and is not stirred before each use it will become dryer and dryer as the liquid epoxy which floats to top and the material is used down in the containers.

We sell additional liquid as George mentioned to extend and/or restore the product. Give me a call at 800-888-2467 if you'd like to discuss and learn more.

Another vote for Buckeye, it is all I use now. Never had a drumming issue. No heating, mixing etc. Just paint it on the form and mount it up.
