Ear Magic and Drumming

Submitted by Jerry on 8/2/06 at 4:18 PM. ( ) 4.153.240.31

I have used about three jars of ear magic and every ear out of this last jar has drummed. I done all the things the same, dip in lacquer thinner to remove any oils left over from tanning and rip the cartlidge up with a stout ruffer. None the less every ear out of this new can has drummed. DOes anybody know what I could be doing wrong.

Where did you get the idea about lacquer thinner?

Did you know that lacquer thinner is an epoxy solvent? You should NEVER, EVER use a solvent based product to "clean oil off". Soaps do that, solvents only "dissolve". You likely had residual lacquer thinner entrapped in the cartilage and just as advertised, it disbonded the Ear Magic once it hardened. I'll bet the Ear Magic was hard, wasn't it?

Lacquer could be one problem

One reason for drumming would be how the ear liner fits. It should be a little loose. It shouldn't just slide in tight, edge to edge. You have to be able to taxi the skin. A wet skin can also cause it to drum. I haven't used tha product so I don't know the kick time. Your epoxy may be setting before the skin dries. You also have to make sure all of the air is worked out and contact is made through out the ear, epoxy and liner. Any voids or air pockets will allow the skin to pull and cause drumming. If your good on reason one than more than likely it has trapped air. It takes some working and grooming to make sure the air is gone. Lacquer may not be a big deal if you dry it off good. But you don't need to use it. Like George said soap and water. The tanning oils I know about are all water soluable. I never bother with either. The ear adhesives, water base or epoxies all seem to be compatible with the tanning oils.

George thank you, I got it from a Joe Meder video where he done that but he was using Bondo. The just started washing them in L.T. with this new can. Thanks

P.S. Dean, I'm using Ear Magic not an earliner but thanks anyway.
