when your doing a deer to enter a compitition, how many of you send the skin to a tannery? or do you tan yourself?

How the skin was tanned, or where it was tanned has nothing to do with outcome of the mount. A beginner can have the best specimen and put the ears on wrong, and add a multitude of other flaws that will make the perfectly tanned skin just a learning experience. However, the experienced taxidermist can use a suspect grade C cape, and pull a ribbon. Most rules will let you purchase a hide already tanned for a competition. The goal is to start with the best specimen you can, and make it look like the real deal. Tan at home, or outsource the work, or buy it already done, it does not matter. It is what you do with it after it is tanned that matters.
