How many taxidermist have security systems in there shops? considering the money ppl spend on going on there hunts and the time they put into the hunts. starting my shop this fall for the first year, just curious what some guys are doing for security from breakins etc.

Even in Wyoming! I have cameras front and back. Double deadbolt locks on doors and heavy wire screen on the windows. I leave the radio and some lights on always. I leave my dog in here alot at night who barks loud at anything. I have asked the police to keep an eye pealed for me and I think they do as some nights I have worked late they have stopped in. Hunters can also get thier own insurance for unfinished mounts while you have them thru SCI. I also pay about 500.00 a year for content insurance, it will not cover everything but who can afford what will? Its a worry but there is a lot you can also do security wise fairly cheaply. Someone tried to break in here last year but did not succeed, the double dead bolts (one high and one low on the door) stopped him, he damaged the door but the locks held. You could not see a thing on the camera film but I think just the sight of them still helps some. They even sell real looking fake ones for that.

12 ga.

12 ga. in one corner and 22 pistol in the drawer. Mostly only during hunting and trapping season though. No seriously. I have a well locked front door, and there are alot of woods behind my shop I dont really think anyone would come in that way. 2 motion detector light on either side of the shop. And a yippy jack russle terrior also patrols the place. Plus the guns, but they just get set there when I come in from huntin or trappin. I live out in the country havent had any problems around here much with breakins. Hopefully it will stay that way.

I have my studio on my property in the country. I have monitored security with motion detectors, glass breaks, and trip lights with halagen bulbs. I havent't had any trouble, but you never know. I have neighbors on either side on my 13 acreas, and someone is always coming and going. I like the fact that the shop is close to the house, not only does it cut down on the commute, but if I forgot to take something out of the freezer, I just run outside to the shop and take it out. I would reccomend monitored security, one time the alarm went off and I was coming back from the store(15 min. away) and I got a call on my cell phone stating there was an alarm going off in zone 3 and by the time I got there, the cops were already there. I left a window open and the wind blew the blinds against the window and set off a glass break alarm.

All our customers have guns

I agree that security is needed. We have an audible alarm. We live on the premises, and we have two very big dogs. Still, I have always thought you would have to be awfully brave to rob a place where every customer has a gun.

Is there that much of a (black) market for stolen mounts?

I know the answere to my own question but just can't
get my mind around the shamless side of some people.

I know it's getting to where you have to watch your bagged
deer in your truck like you have to watch your guns.
I've had a good buck in the back of the truck parked
at a resturant and some "hunter" came up and offered
me $500.00 for it. Guess he would have wagged it home
and told his wife and friends he shot it, maybe mount it
and put it next to all the other deer he bought in
previous seasons.

Think! and be realistic

Not much of a black market for mounts but there IS A HUGE BLACK MARKET for METH! The idiots hooked on that stuff (and other crap like it,) will break in and steal whatever and when ever they can anyone and place they can and everytime they can to pay for the habit. The precieved value and unsecure shop is a "INVITATION" to be broken into to.
