I had a deer shoulder mount brought to me today to see if I could de bug it and repair the damage. I did not see any live bugs just alot of what appeared to be shed shells no more than 1/16 or 1/32 in size. They bored holes into the edges of the ears and the hair was so loose that you could literally blow it off anywhere the bugs had been. This fellow has dozens of mounts in his place of business but this was the only one -so far- that had been attacked. It will have to be re mounted, a complete loss. Any ideas what kind of critter may be at fault?

The mount is around 20 years old and appears to be of decent quality.
And what you found (one of my favorite words thanks to Stephen Rogers) is "frass". ALL of his mounts need to be treated and the room fumigated . If not, it won't be the last one to look like that.
Don , as George said ,that head is infested with dermistid bettle and moth larva .Now the problem you should really be worried about is , if you have this in your house , you can bet any of those bettles or moths are now with you and your trophies can be attacked . If you have a chest freezer , stick it in there until you decide what to do as this will kill whatever is left alive . When your ready to work on it , I would remove the cape outside the house and wash the form with alcohol to kill any eggs . E mail me as I have something you can use to catch the bugs . Rick
