can someone explain the rear panel of a pedestal mount, is there a groove in the back or do i put the groove in??? need help

some pedestal fomrs come with a pre-formed groove that has to be
dremeled out,others don't have it but i usually cut my own in it
to give the back a nice uniform curve.
