Preserving dried velvet antlers?

A customer brought in a P&Y mule deer in velvet yesterday. He waited the mandatory 60 day dry-out period for the score, then brought it to the studio. It doesn't smell TOO bad, but I wanted to try to preserve the velvet and keeping it from peeling in the future. I was thinking about soaking the entire rack in a mild formaldyhide/saline/Borax solution in hopes of removing the slight odor, but I don't want to damage the velvet (it is intact with no peeling). My customer does not want the velvet peeled and the horns re-velvetized (is that a word?). Does any one have any other suggestions? Thank you all in advance!
