European skull mount????

Submitted by Ernie on 10/21/99. ( erniboon@aol.com ) 205.188.209.39

I am trying to do a couple of european mounts on white-tails and a boar skull. Need to know a good process to make them white and clean looking. Liquid bleach? boil, in bleach? I don't know but would like to do them myself!

Ah yes, it's time for the skull cleaning questions. I put together a little menu last year featuring some of the good info posted on this subject within the forums, so I'll provide the link again. Click here for Skull Cleaning Archives on the Forums.

Skull whitening

Ernie-
Start by simmering the skulls for about 30 minutes in some
water with soda ash(sal soda), then scrape off remaining
meat with a dull knife.
After the skulls are clean, they should be whitened with
hydrogen peroxide (at least a 15% solution), which can
be found at your taxidermy supplier or a beauticians supply.
Mix peroxide with magnesium carbonate to make a paste about
the consistency of heavy cream, apply to the skull with
a paint brush.
Let set over night and remove powder with a dry brush or
flush with running water.
Use gloves and eye protection!Do not breathe fumes or dust!
Hang skull to dry, spray with 3 coats of clear lacquer.
If you have a particularly greasy skull you can repeat
the whitening before sealing.
Good luck
mike
