I HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM NORTHERN MAINE WITH A BIG BUCK....GOING TO
NEW YORK TOMMOROW. HOW SHOULD I PRESERVE THE HEAD IN CASE I HAVE IT
MOUNTED. I HAVE CAPED IT AS USUAL. SHOULD I FREEZE THE WHOLE HEAD UNTIL
I CAN GET IT TO MY TAXIDERMIST?

Bob,
You can never go wrong by freezing a specimen...bacteria needs moisture and heat. Just don't let it set in the freezer for a lengthy amount of time or you'll risk freezer burn. Congrats on the buck!

I'm sure any taxidermist would prefer to cape the skull himself, as some do things differently. Salted meat doesn't freeze, so just put it in a sealed bag and freeze. Your taxidermist will get better measurements having the head intact, too. Good job!

Bob,
I just placed a step-by-step, what to do with a deer before bringing it to the taxidermist, in the beginners forum, "Help...Deer Head".
Look this over, if you should have any further questions, I would be glad to help.
Mike
